ABOUT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
KITT Engineering was founded in 1995 as “Kreatief IT Toepasser” (Creative IT Implementer). Over the years, it has established itself as an engineering firm operating at the intersection of “Technology and Art.” By leveraging a broad spectrum of technologies, such as sensors, interfacing, hardware and software development, KITT Engineering bridges the gap between creative ideas and their realization. With a successful track record of projects over the past 25 years, the company has built a strong reputation in this unique field. Our Research and Development team is an important part of the organization.

OUR AMBITIONS
Transforming a creative idea into a product that does justice to the original concept. We achieve this by applying existing technology in an unconventional way. Additional development ensures that we bring the creative vision as close to reality as possible. We are known for our creative and solution-oriented approach, specializing in the ‘Tech Behind Daily Life’.
Our R&D Roadmap (TRL 1-9)
Discovery Phase
1. Fundamental research
Conducting research on an innovative idea and the basic principles of the innovation. In doing so, the engagement in basic research and desk research is enhanced.
Discovery Phase
2. Augmented research
Engage in the formulation of the technological concept and practical applications. In this phase, experimental and/or analytical research are key.
Discovery Phase
3. Proof of concept (POC)
Investigate the applicability of the concept on an experimental basis (experimental proof of concept). Hypotheses about various components of the concept are validated and tested.
Development Phase
4. Implementation and testing
Test the POC of the innovation on a lab scale. This is also called a low fidelity prototype. It is still a long way from a final product, process or service.
Development Phase
5. Prototype validation
Investigate the operation of the technology concept in a relevant environment. This is the first step in demonstrating the technology. At this stage the prototype is not far from the final product or system.
Development Phase
6. Prototype demonstration in testing environment
Extensively test and demonstrate the concept in a relevant test environment. The concept provides insight into the operation of all components together.
Demonstration Phase
7. Demonstration prototype in operational environment
Test and demonstrate the concept in a user environment to prove operation in an operational environment. This will provide new insights for the final market application.
Demonstration Phase
8. Product finalization
The technological operation has been tested and it has been proven to meet expectations, qualifications and standards. The financial frameworks for production and launch has been determined.
Deployment Phase
9. Market introduction
Innovation is technically and commercially ready for launch in the desired market environment. Now that the total development process is complete, the product can be introduced in the market.
An overview of some of our Research and Development projects:
‘The Environmental Monitor’ (De Omgevingsmonitor)
The environmental monitor measures parameters such as temperature, humidity, noise, PM2.5 and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). It can be used both indoors and outdoors. Once the monitor is operational and installed, it transmits data to a public online platform. This platform provides a clear overview of air quality in the local area and across the Benelux region. A total of 1,500 visitors to the 2024 World of Technology, Industry and Science convention (WoTS) had the possibility to collect this monitor and register it at their living location.
‘The Smart Pavement Tile’ (De Slimme Tegel):
ProRail, the organization responsible for managing Dutch train stations, aims to improve passenger distribution on platforms while providing travelers with additional information. The Smart Pavement Tile by KITT Engineering is a technical innovation designed to subtly inform passengers about incoming trains. The tiles light up when a train is approaching and can also stimulate travelers to move to less crowded areas. While serious incidents are rare, everyone understands that an overcrowded platform poses risks. Sometimes, congestion is highly localized, occurring primarily in areas where staircases lead down from the station hall onto the platform. Our smart solution prevents overcrowding and divides travelers evenly over the platform, without the need for extra personnel.
Lappset Interactive Playground Equipment
KITT Engineering is the dedicated development partner of Lappset, a company specializing in interactive playground equipment. Our experts design, test, and refine these interactive play structures in-house. Since the entire development process can be handled within our organization, we ensure high-quality and innovative solutions. Lappset’s interactive playground equipment can be found worldwide.
